FornearlyadecadeSharonMcConnellhasbeencreatingmemorablebronzesculpturesthatexpressherdeeppassionandexperienceinthehorseindustry.Herbronzeshavebeenfeaturedinpopularmuseumsandleadingartshowsacrossthenation.CurrentlythreeofherbronzesareprominentlydisplayedinaleadingFortWorthrestaurant.McConnellsbronzeHeadintothePenisinspiredbywomenhorsetrainers.WhilementypicallydominatetheindustrywomenareoftenequallyifnotmoresuccessfulsaysSharon.MarriedtoatrainerMcConnellisatraineraswell.YearsagowhenMcConnellwasntbusyraisinghertwodaughtersorhelpingherhusbandinthebarnorpenshewaspainting.HerhusbandRonniesuggestedshetakeoneofherpaintingstowell-knownWesternartistChuckDeHaan.ThedayMcConnellvisitedChuckwasworkingwithclayandafterseeingherworksuggestedshetryherhandatsculpting.Thatdayshecreatedherfirstbronzedonewiththumbsandtoothpicks.WhilesheisconsideredselftaughtsheisthankfulforbeingblessedwithwonderfulteacherssuchasDeHaanMelLawsonandafewothersthatdidntmindsharingtheirknowledge.McConnellsartisfoundintheprivatecollectionsofranchersworldchampionhorseownersandcutters.ShealsohastwobronzesondisplayatDelFriscosSteakhouseinFortWorthTheTallestHogattheTroughandUOlGoat.Afteryearsintheindustryherworkisnowrecognizedatmajormuseumsandshows.McConnellsartwasrecentlyfeaturedattheNationalCowgirlMuseumandHallofFameinFortWorth.Hersculpturesweredisplayedatthe2012TrappingsofTexasThePhippenMuseum2012MemorialDayArtShowinPrescottArizonaBreckenridgeFineArtShowatBreckenridgeColoradowhereshereceivedanhonorablementionBosqueArtClassicCliftonTexasandExpressionsoftheSoulinWeatherford.In2013shewaschosentoexhibitintheshowAmericasHorseinArtatAmarilloTexas.McConnellandherhusbandhavelivedandtrainedhorsesinCaliforniaColoradoFloridaandtheTexasPanhandle.Fromthehorsestothelandherexperiencesaremirroredinherwork.SharonMcConnellHeadintothePen TheSulRossBarSRBarRodeoAssociationBirthplaceofNationalIntercollegiateRodeoAssociationForoversixtyyearstheNationalIntercollegiateRodeoAssociationNIRAmissionhasbeenPreservingWesternheritagethroughcollegiaterodeo.Todaythereareoveronehundredcollegerodeosayearwithonehundredandthirty-sevenmemberschoolsanduniversities.ButdoyouknowthecriticalrolethattheSulRossBarSRBarRodeoAssociationplayedintheformationoftheNIRAWhenmembersoftheSulRossStateTeachersCollegeClipandBrandClubmetinOctober1947anannouncementwasmadethataRopingClubwasbeingorganizedforstudentsinterestedinropingandrodeoing.ByNovembertheRopingClubwasorganizedandnamedtheBarSRBarRodeoAssociation.MonthsbeforetheOctoberandNovemberannouncementsstudentswerepracticingtocompeteintheirfirstcollegiaterodeoatJohnTarletonCollegescheduledforlateNovember.ThestudentnewspaperSkylinereportedtheresultsofthisrodeoItwasaffirmedthattheSulRossRodeoAssociationwonthetrophywhichwasawardedtotheschoolwiththehighesttotalnumberofpoints.AndinAprilof1948theBarSRBarsix-manrodeoteamwonfirstplaceintheHardin-SimmonsRodeo.NIRATrophyCup LarryAbbottDickensTexasLarryAbbottwasborninStonewallCountyTexasmovedtoNewMexicoandreturnedtoAspermontTexastoattendhighschool.Heacquiredhisloveforhorsesasayoungboyfromhisdadandunclesandspenthissummersonthebackofahorse.SincethenAbbotthasworkedonranchesbigandsmallthroughoutWestTexasandSouthDakota.Abbottacquiredhisinterestinbitandspurmakingaround1978.AftervisitingAdolphBayersshopseveraltimeshedecidedtobuildabithimself.Afteraperiodoftrialanderrorhebegantakingafeworders.GearmakerJerryCatesinvitedAbbotttocometohisshopforthedayandwatchhimwork.Catesinfluenceadviceandworkmanshipwereagreatasset.ThroughouttheyearsAbbotthasfinetunedhisproductsfortheworkingcowboy.Hispersonalexperienceofridingmanyhoursinthesaddleworkingcattleandknowingwhattoolworksbestandwhenhasbroughthimtowhereheistoday.AbbottisafoundingmemberoftheInternationalGuildofBitandSpurMakers. DaveAldersonTwinFallsIdahoDaveAldersongrewupontheprairieofSouthDakota.Whenhewas16AldersonbefriendedasilversmithinDeadwood.Withoutacarhewouldoftenspendseveralhoursadaywalkingtoandfromhershop.AldersonsfirstprojectwasaringaMothersDaygiftforhismom.Hegotaprettystoneandsetitinaring.HeevenornamentedthepiecewithsomegoldhehadpannedinaSouthDakotacreek.Finallyitwasfinishedandhesetoffforhomeafoottopresenthisgifttohismother.IlostitonthewayhomeAldersonrecallswithasmile.Fellrightoutofmypocket.RetracinghisstepsAldersonfoundthering.Ithadbeenrunoverbyacarbuthefixeditupandhismomstillhasthering.TheAldersonfamilymovedtoCaliforniaandin1978AldersonworkedatGordonHayesshopBitsofSilverforabouttenyears.Whenhestartedhewasmostlyconfinedtosoldering.Aldersonlongedtoengravebutnoonewouldshowhimhow.FinallyonedayIcorneredHayessonAldersonsaid.Iaskedhimhowhemadethosecuts.HeshowedmeandforthenextsixmonthsIpracticedathomeeverynightforhours.Iwouldnailapieceofcoppertoablockofwoodandpracticeonthat.SinceleavingBitsofSilverAldersonhasdonesilverworkforjewelrystoresandBobSchaezlein.Becauseheworkedundersomeoneelsesnameforovertwenty-fiveyearsAldersonspersonalreputationasanexceptionalcraftsmanwasslowincoming.ErnieMarshafoundingmemberoftheTCAArecognizedthebeautyandqualityofAldersonsworkandencouragedhimtoapplyformembershipinthatprestigiousassociation.Hisbidwassuccessfulandthetalentoftheboywholovedbeautifulthingsfromtheearthwasfinallyrecognized.ReiningHorseBuckleEngravedSteelSterlingSilverandGoldDaveAlderson ChaseAlmondFortWorthTexasImagecourtesyofJimRogersItsbeensaidbyvirtuallyeveryartistbutitalsoholdstrueforChaseAlmondthatitsthejourneyandnotthedestinationthatguideshiswork.GrowingupinFortWorthTexasChasestartedpaintingwithwatercolorswhenhewasfourteenandworkedinthatmediumuntilhissisteralsoanartistintroducedhimtooilsin1998.FormetheprocessofpaintinginvolvesmorethanjustrecordingwhatIsee.Mygoalisfortheviewertoexperiencetheemotionalresponsethatinspiredmetopaintit.Totransferthatresponsetotheviewerthroughthepaintingsotospeak.Mytechniquefocusesonconveyingthismorewithcolorandlightandlessaboutintricatedetail.PrimarilyanenpleinairpainterhehasstudiedwithKimEnglishEricMichaelsGeorgeStricklandandQuangHo.IamattractedtopristinelandscapesbutatthesametimeImintriguedbythosewithhumanpresenceorinfluence.Streetandbeachscenesareoftenseeninhiswork.Iliketodosmallpleinairpiecescombinedwithphotosandtakethembacktothestudioanddolargerworks.Theemotionandimmediacythatissometimescapturedinapleinairworkisoftendifficulttotranslateintoastudiopiece.Itsoneofthegreatmysteriesofpaintingfromlife.ChaselookstoJohnSingerSargentJoaquinSorollaAndersZornandRobertHenriforinspiration.Heco-ownsarestaurantdesignbusinessanddivideshistimebetweenhishomeinParkerCountyTexasandaranchinTrinidadColorado.Heisanavidquailhunterhorsemanandfisherman.AlsoaworldtravelerChasehaspaintedenpleinaironfivecontinentsrecordingnewlandscapesandculturesthroughhisart.ChisosLastLightOilonLinen12X24ChaseAlmond In1970MikeAnderswasborninLovingtonNewMexicoandshortlythereafterheandhisfamilymovedtoSanAngeloTexaswherehegrewup.WhenMikegraduatedfromhighschoolheworkedatsalebarnsandonseveralarearanches.Atthistimehealsobuilthisownsaddle.In1992Anderswenttoworkatasaddleshopandbeganhisapprenticeshipasastraphand.Withinayearhewasoneofthreesaddlemakersintheshop.ThroughtheyearsofsaddlemakingMikemetanumberofbitandspurmakersandhedecidedtolearnthiscraftaswell.Inthespringof2002hebegantoteachhimselfhowtomakebitsandspursandhascontinuedtorefinehiscraft.AlongthewayMikehasreceivedadviceandguidancefromothermakerswhowereatremendoushelptohim.MikeAndersSanAngeloTexasBuckleSteelSterlingSilverOverlaysandFineSilverInlaysMikeAnders
