The Mr. & Mrs. Robert E. McKee III Family Fred Darge Collection

A Friendly Encounter

Oil on canvas, 20″ x 24″, ca. 1940s

Artists seem to have a nagging problem of what to paint next. Once Darge settled on a subject matter that he was enthusiastic about, he would complete several paintings of approximately the same theme but would differentiate the setting and dimensions. Old Pedro was someone he took a personal liking to and used his image in at least three paintings of which we are aware and one precision wood carving. Friendly Encounter is one of those paintings into which he skillfully put his heart.
