2017 Trappings of Texas Premier Artist

Herman Walker spent his formative years in the ranch country of West Texas on a 120 square mile ranch. After receiving a degree in Animal Science from Texas Tech, Herman began his art career. While at Tech, he became very interested in the art of sculpting. After graduation, he worked for a manufacturing firm and in his spare time concentrated on learning casting techniques.

From 1973-1978 Herman and his wife, Deanne, had a gallery/foundry in Kerrville, Texas. When his paintings and sculpture began to gain recognition, they moved back to Eldorado, Texas, to be close to the subject matter he loved. He said, “I paint here because of the people, this land and my feeling for it. Ranch life is lived on the cutting edge. In this region, nature doesn’t always deal kindly with man. The men and women who live on this land must be strong in character and able to face adversity. There is joy, beauty and satisfaction of the good times as well as the agony, loneliness and desolation of the bad times. A force and strength within the people, the animals and the land itself is so vibrant. I try to paint this and hope that those who know will be able to say, ‘That’s the way it is’.”

In 2008 Herman and Deanne returned to Kerrville to be near their children and grandchildren. And he picked up his paint brushes and began his never forgotten love-painting. “The faces have changed and many of the old large ranches are no longer in existence, but the people, the animals, the land remain. The memories run deep. The beauty still remains and entices us to ride over that next hill and see what we came here for.” The essence of my work reflects the traditions and values of the cowboy. They live, work and play putting their brand on the land”.

Walker’s works have been exhibited around the state at National Ranching Heritage Center Summer Stampede 2016, Lubbock; America’s Horse in Art Show at The American Quarter Horse Museum, Amarillo; Bosque Art Classic, Clifton; The Art of Cutting Western Art Show and Sale, National Cutting Horse Association Foundation, Fort Worth; National and Museum of Western Art-Fall Roundup, Kerrville and in Colorado at Windows to the West-Estes Park, Colorado.
